Unexpected BitLocker prompts - drive is not formatted

How to fix the "Drive is Not Formatted" error with unexpected BitLocker prompts

Aran Pitter, our Commercial Director says:

"Encountering an error where your drive appears unformatted and prompts for BitLocker encryption can be both confusing and frustrating, especially if you never enabled BitLocker in the first place. This issue often arises due to file system corruption, a change in system configuration, or Windows mistakenly detecting the drive as encrypted. Below, we’ll explore the possible causes and solutions to help you regain access to your data."

Possible Causes

  • File System Corruption
The drive's file system may have become corrupted, making it unreadable by Windows.
  • BitLocker Misconfiguration
Windows might mistakenly assume the drive was encrypted due to a system glitch.
  • Drive Letter or Partition Issues
The drive might not be properly assigned or recognized by the operating system.
  • Hardware Issues
A failing drive or faulty connection could cause this error.

Solutions to Try

1. Check Drive Status Using Disk Management

  • Press Win + X and select Disk Management.
  • Locate the affected drive.
  • If the drive appears as "RAW," the file system is likely corrupted, requiring recovery.
  • If it appears as "Unallocated," it may need to be initialized and formatted (data will be lost).

2. Run CHKDSK to Repair File System

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Type chkdsk E: /f /r (replace E: with the correct drive letter) and press Enter.
  • Allow the scan to complete and check if the drive is now accessible.

3. Disable BitLocker Protection (If Misidentified as Encrypted)

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Run manage-bde -status E: to check BitLocker status.
  • If it shows as encrypted, try manage-bde -off E: to disable BitLocker.

4. Use Data Recovery Software

  • If the drive remains inaccessible, you may need third-party data recovery tools like EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard or Recuva.

5. Try Accessing the Drive on Another Computer

  • Sometimes, different system configurations can help recognize the drive correctly.
