Typical RAID Symptoms

Failed RAID Controller

If the RAID controller fails, it becomes difficult or impossible to continue using the array in its original configuration. A controller failure can typically be identified by an amber light on the RAID’s controller status board. If the controller fails, it may be impossible to access your data without professional recovery techniques.

RAID Not Recognised

You may be presented with a ‘RAID not found’ error message when booting up your machine, which could indicate either a configuration issue or a controller failure. Be sure that the array is cabled properly, and check to see if the firmware is up to date.

Blue Screen

If the drives within the RAID are not synchronizing, it can lead to a ‘blue screen of death. If it happens repeatedly, this may suggest a serious problem with one of the drives. If it just happens once it is likely just a one-off, but it is worth keeping an eye on the health of your RAID.

Error Messages

Your RAID manager will generate warning messages whenever one of the units is failing, or if a failure is imminent. It is imperative that these failing units be repaired, or replaced immediately. You can set up email or SMS warnings so that you can detect any failing units wherever you are.

File Structure is Corrupted

If the BIOS is recognising your RAID, but the data is inaccessible, this is indicative of a logical failure. Providing no data recovery software has been run and there’s been no risk of data being overwritten, the chances of a successful recovery are high.
